Asia’s Confluence

Taiwan, I once knew as Formosa
Now the politically correct Chinese Taipei
Where Chiang Kai-Shek was forced into exile
By Mao’s red army
The great nations too timid after the war
To give more than token resistance
Islands lying off continents often struggle
Maybe the last resort for peoples driven away
Like the Celts driven west from Europe to Ireland
Madagascar and Africa, Cuba and the Americas
Taiwan, once overrun by Japanese invaders
Now bustling with mainland tourists
Earthquakes, typhoons continually rock
This defiant rock in the South China Sea
In the median of the island
Reflecting the heavens above
Like an ocean under the stars
Sun Moon Lake has seen it all
Now trying to hide itself from the world
By encompassing the low flying clouds
That wait their turn
To envelop the fluid beauty
