The Soccer World Cup

The soccer world cup comes to South Africa, more remembered by the sounds than the sport.

The Soccer World Cup

Vuvuzela, Mandela

Vuvuzela
Mandela
One pitch cacophony
Piercing decibels
One nation’s symphony
Of forgiven cells
Joyous bellicose sounds
Ephemeral bafana fun
God’s heaven bound
Invictus’ work done
A rainbow of noise and colour
Starts and ends as one

A Beautiful Game Dies

Over-rated, overpaid prima donnas
In their own small town back home
Collectively fail on the world stage
As form, desire, pride forsake them
Under the glare of expectation
In the wondrous new stadia of hope

Zuma stands proud
As his country accepts the challenge
He stands yawning
As he watches cheats and fairies
Who pout and cry and feign
The derision descends on feebleness and pathos

Could Cape Town, Durban and Joburg
Deliver at the apogee of the game?
Could Xhosa, Zulu and Afrikaans
Join as one nation?
Of course they could, and did
At the graveside of the beautiful game

Cape Town, South Africa, December 2010
