Promises in the Wind

On a brief visit to Hong Kong to advise government on research strategy, the tension with the mainland is palpable; soon to lead to unrest and student occupations.

Promises in the Wind

Uncertain people
Under threatening clouds
Anxiousness in Kowloon
As stormy weather
Drives down from the Pearl Delta
Between and within the hills
And islands of Hong Kong
Dividing and conquering the nervous
Who had been promised stability
As the British civilly left

Now the epicentre of a clash
Between tectonic plates
Of capitalism and communism
Could the Chinese hold
The promise of democracy
Amid the turbulence of Beijing power?

Islands and seas from
Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam
Occupied in support of capital
Are feeling the wrath
Of the dragon, the new behemoth
Will the clouds disperse
Allowing the territories to stand firm
Or will they too surrender?

Hong Kong, August 2014
